State Bank of India (SBI) has informed the government about its need for capital and the lender will look to tap the equity market with a share issue in 2009-2010 (April-March), Chairman O P Bhatt said. SBI’s fully subscribed rights issue was priced at Rs 1,590 a share. “This was first-of-its-kind as earlier government used to infuse money into banks for recapitalisation. But the government gave the capital to SBI because it bought our growth story. Other banks also had applied for capital, but SBI was the first to get the capital from the government,” Bhatt said.  I am not sure if this is for good or bad but lets hope for the best.

The Federal Reserve took two new steps to unfreeze credit for homebuyers, consumers and small businesses, committing up to $800 billion.

The central bank will purchase as much as $600 billion in debt issued or backed by government-chartered housing-finance companies. It will also set up a programme of $200 billion to support consumer and small-business loans, the Fed said in statements today in Washington.

With today’s announcement, the central bank is starting to use some of the unorthodox policy tools that Chairman Ben S Bernanke outlined as a Fed governor six years ago. Policy makers are aiming to prevent a financial collapse and stamp out the threat of deflation.

Hope that the Government has sufficient surplus funds to face these nightmares.
